How to Install a Wig Over Locs: Tips from Yolanda Renee (@etcblogmag)
Wearing wigs over locs is a game-changer and it gives you the versatility without compromising your natural hair or locs. As someone who's been natural since 2012, and on a loc journey for almost 3 years, and a long-time influencer for RPG Show since 2016, I’ve mastered techniques that are easy for beginners! I wouldn’t call myself a wig girlie who can slay a wig like Ekane. LOL! However, the final results are giving scalp and those who see me in person are always amazed at how natural my wigs look! Here’s a quick guide to achieving a flawless wig installation over locs.
1. preparation is key
Start with freshly washed and moisturized locs. It’s essential to avoid buildup or dryness, as your locs will be tucked away for hours or even days. I recommend using a lightweight leave-in conditioner to keep your hair hydrated under the wig. My go to brand at the moment is CurlDaze and their Silky Hydration Detangling Leave-In Conditioner is so light-weight and smells amazing. It’s packed with kukui oil which is from Hawaii and has tons of benefits!
2. a smooth base
To create a smooth base, you can braid or flat twist your locs however, I simply put my locs into one ponytail or two ponytails at the nape of my neck. I of course use goody hair bands for this process. For those with long or thick locs, try crisscrossing the ends before putting your wig cap on. The goal is to make your locs as flat as possible for a natural-looking wig application. The bulk of your locs will land at the nape of your neck and although you can feel them sitting there the wig will lay over them and it will be undetected!
3. cap it off
Use a wig cap to further flatten your locs and protect them from friction. I suggest a breathable stocking cap for comfort. You can even use 2 for even more security!
4. customize your wig
RPG Show wigs are known for their natural hairlines and versatility, but every head is different and we all have different taste when it comes to how we want our wigs to look. Some may like baby hairs while others do not! Some people like to pluck the hairline and use foundation to tint the lace for a seamless match with their skin tone; others may not want to do all that. LOL!
5. secure your wig
Position your wig and adjust the straps for a snug fit. For extra security, use wig adhesive or combs if your wig has them. Make sure the edges lay flat to prevent lifting. This particular wig has a strap, 3 combs (two in the front and one in the back), there is also an adjustable band at the nape of the neck with two clamps. Each of these allows you to secure the wig to your unique head shape! I do not use glue whatsoever however, I do use got2b hair spray on the hair line to mold the lace to my forehead. This is the key to getting that ‘scalp’ look! This hairspray is so strong that your lace will not move until you use water to remove your wig at night.
6. style & slay
Style the wig to your liking. Whether you’re going for sleek and straight or bouncy curls, RPG Show wigs make it easy to transform your look. Finish the got2b hair spray (or with a touch of edge control for baby hairs), blending the lace into your natural hairline for a polished look.
7. maintenance matters
After wearing your wig, cleanse your locs to prevent buildup from adhesives or products. Also cleanse the wig’s hairline for the same exact reason. You do not want build on the lace or it will compromise the quality! Regularly moisturize your locs to maintain their health.
